Benteke
|
Will our defence be able to handle him?
Hatrick for his country Belgium this evening against minnows Gibraltar.
The striker also netted the first goal of the game after just SEVEN seconds from the kick-off, to produce a new World Cup qualifying record for the fastest goal scored.
Benteke has been in a rich vein of form, scoring three goals for Palace in September, all with his head. But he showed he is equally as deadly with his feet, firing in the first goal with his left foot this evening.
Palace fans have been delighted with the news and it looks like there's no stopping the club's record signing, with West Ham next in the firing line this Saturday at Selhurst Park.

I don't think you can compare carroll to any striker on the basis the cunt doesn't actually play the game

Are you on a wind-up daveyg?
Andy Carroll is 27 and in just over 10 seasons has got 68 goals in 253 games. 20 of those goals came in the Championship.
Benteke is 2 years younger at 25 and has played just over 9 seasons with 110 goals from 286 games.
Benteke came to EPL in 2012 and has played 150 PL games with 62 goals since. He also got 24 goals in the Belgian league.
Not only has Benteke played more games than Carroll but he scores more goals as well. I like your rose tinted specs but you should have gone to spec savers mate...

I don't like the way we play with Carroll we just lump it up the pitch to the big target man. BFS football. Benteke is just more of the same. Palace did it all game. I like to see the ball played along the ground not in the air so much, otherwise it just bypasses our best ball players Payet and Lanzini. We would be transformed if we had a proper top striker.

He's a confidence player like a lot of forwards ... it drained out of him so fast when he fucked up the penalty that you could almost see it rising like steam from his head. I knew right then he would give us no problems in the second half.

I'd have Benteke over any of our current forwards. He walks straight into our team in my humble.

Re: Benteke

Unimpressed. He's far too static / lazy for my liking
We've already got one like that only better (if we can get him away from the bar) so didn't need another
Dodged bullet for my money, prefer Zaza

I think we've just proven that we have a better defence than Gibraltar...
I would not have been excited by signing Benteke.

I reckon it was our best from those available. With Carroll, Sakho and Ayew available though we have probably a better starting eleven choice.

The side that we started with yesterday is just about our best in my opinion

All that said he scores the penalty and that clear heading chance and he's the matchwinner.

Re: Benteke

I think we saw some of the weaknesses of Benteke yesterday. I think our defenders don't like getting pulled about but he is a static target man like Carroll. He is good but not great with the ball at his feet. I think the big problem with a physical player like that is that they blow hot and cold (as we've seen with Carroll) - against the right defence and on the right day they will be unplayable, but it's hard if not impossible to repeat that level of physicality every match. Also big risk of injuries.

Slav put a squad together with one eye on European football, which turned out to be a waste of time. We are left with some lame ducks, which he has felt he has to justify playing maybe.
No disrespect to Pardew, but his first task would be just to keep them up. Made his job a lot easier with hindsight.

I see what you mean, I still think 'in form' our first 11 largely picks itself, and its stronger...

I'd take Scott DANN over any of our centre halves.

I did think we could do better than Benteke when we were linked with him in the summer, but with hindsight, I wished we had now.
